Cut each strand 4× the finished project length for square knot patterns. Dense patterns need 5–6×, and loose bohemian styles need 3–4×. Always add 20% buffer for mistakes and finishing.
Each cord is folded in half over the dowel, ring, or mounting point, creating 2 working strands. So if you need 20 working strands, you cut 10 cords. Each cord should be cut to double the per-strand working length.
A standard single-pot plant hanger needs 8 strands of about 5–6m each = 40–48m total. Use 4 cords of 10–12m, folded in half. For a large heavy pot, use 12 strands at 6m each = 72m total.
3mm twisted or braided cord is the most popular choice for wall hangings and plant hangers. Use 1–2mm for keychains and jewellery. 5mm+ for chunky, statement pieces. Single-strand cord gives great fringe; 3-ply twisted is stronger and more durable.
The multiplier accounts for how much cord is consumed by knots. Square knots use 4× the finished length (4m of cord becomes 1m of knotted piece). Spiral/half-square knots use about 5×. Dense chevron or diamond patterns use 6×. Loose weaves use only 3×.
